Sepp van den Berg just received a promotion that could change his Liverpool career. The 20-year-old has been waiting for this.
Suddenly, Sepp van den Berg is Liverpool’s cover from the bench in two positions. That’s the situation for tomorrow as injuries alter the Reds’ plans.
Ibrahima Konaté is out injured, of course, and now Joel Matip joins him. That pushes Joe Gomez into a starting role alongside Virgil van Dijk and takes him off the bench. Liverpool’s fifth-choice centre-back is now needed as cover and it appears that will be Van den Berg.
But with Calvin Ramsay also out, Van den Berg is Liverpool’s best cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back, too. His versatility is paying dividends and he’s one injury – or exhausted teammate – away from getting game-time.
That’s why Liverpool reportedly don’t wish to loan him out right now. As per the Daily Mail, the Reds aren’t accepting any offers right now as Van den Berg may be needed at Anfield.
Sepp van den Berg and his Liverpool career
This is the scenario all young players dream of, really. Their potential opportunity to make a mark and perhaps establish themselves in the side.
That’s how Alexander-Arnold and Gomez did it, in fact. They got chances right at the start of a season as teammates suffered injuries. Once they were in, they never left.

Van den Berg still needs a bit more to happen before he gets opportunities like that but the fact that Liverpool would keep him around at all is a good sign. The 20-year-old is a wonderfully talented, versatile player and that lends itself well to being cover in this squad.
This was always going to be a make-or-break season for Van den Berg but we assumed it would be on loan. Instead, he could get the chance to make his mark at Anfield as soon as tonight.
