Ajax star, Antony – a reported target for Liverpool – has scored a sensational goal this weekend. The Brazilian is a wanted man.
Antony is one of the best young wingers around – or at least, one of the most in demand. The Ajax star has all the skills you’d want in a wide player and he showed that pretty spectacularly against Groningen on Sunday.
Ajax shamed their opponents, winning 6-1 on the back of a Steven Bergwijn hat-trick. It was Antony who procured the moment of the game on 28 minutes, however.
The 22-year-old picked up the ball deep on the right flank and dribbled to the edge of the box. A few more touches to get it out of his feet allowed Antony to arrow one directly into the far top corner. It couldn’t have been placed any better.
Antony scores a spectacular goal
Liverpool supposedly have eyes on Antony, of course. Yahoo Sports and Fabrizio Romano both separately made that claim over the summer – it just always felt unlikely in 2022.
We wonder if 2023 makes sense, though. Roberto firmino could leave Liverpool and the Reds may fancy adding a winger rather than another central forward.
What we’re sure of is that Antony is a fantastic talent and one Liverpool could really turn into a star. He has all the magic you’d want in a winger and he could be a true world-beater in the right system. We think the Reds could provide that system.
Now, fitting him into the same squad as Mohamed Salah would be tough but not impossible. Though, the Egyptian might actually have been the reason for Liverpool’s interest. He hadn’t signed his new contract when the interest was reported – it’s possible Antony was a potential replacement for Liverpool’s no.11.
If that is the case, we won’t expect to see him at Anfield anytime soon. But we can’t help but hold out hope after seeing that goal today.
