Patrick Vieira has claimed that it’s virtually impossible to find an atmosphere as good as Liverpool have at Anfield.
Speaking in a pre-match press conference via the Liverpool Echo, Vieira spoke about Anfield ahead of Liverpool vs Crystal Palace on Monday.
“It’s difficult to find a better atmosphere (than Anfield). The players are really excited, it’s a fantastic stadium and atmosphere. We want to enjoy ourselves,” said the Palace boss.
“It will be challenging but we can make it challenging for them. Last year we had some good opportunities to score goals, at home we created those situations again. We have to be brave and, with the strength we have, try to play that game with personality. We will try to perform our best.”
Looking back on last season
Remarkably, Liverpool have won the last eleven meetings with Crystal Palace. In football, it’s always healthy to be wary of these kinds of records – nothing can last forever.
As Vieira mentions, Palace did come close to ending that streak at Selhurst Park in January. After Liverpool took an early two goal lead, the Eagles flew back into the match.
If it weren’t for the heroics of Alisson Becker, they could easily have won that day. In the end, The Reds took a 2-1 win and three points back to Merseyside.
In the home game, Liverpool were relatively comfortable. Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita secured a 3-0 win at Anfield in September.
Liverpool looking for Anfield boost on Monday
Liverpool will be hoping that home advantage can help them once again on Monday night.
After a dismal run of six home losses in a row during 2020/21, Liverpool went unbeaten at Anfield in the Premier League last season.
Following a disappointing opening day result at Fulham, the team will be counting on a lift from the crowd.
In that respect, it couldn’t have worked out better for Liverpool to have their first home game on a Monday evening. The crowd tends to be a little more electric when the sun goes down. With Darwin Nunez likely on display for the first time, there’s bound to be a a good atmosphere.
It has felt like a long wait since Liverpool last played. They’ll soon get their chance to make amends for a sloppy display against Fulham in-front of the watching Kop.
