Liverpool icon Kenny Dalglish has thanked fans days after the anniversary of his signing with the club.

Wednesday marked 45 years to the day that The King signed for Liverpool. Taking to Twitter, Dalglish today sent a message to his adoring supporters.

“Thank you to the people of Liverpool for adopting us as Scousers!” wrote the 71-year-old. “Hope you all have a great weekend in the sunshine!”

10th August 1977 marked the start of a long journey with Liverpool which made him one of the most revered figures in the club’s history.

45 years of a Liverpool icon

Not many players at any club can boast the kind of legacy that Dalglish has with Liverpool.

He may no longer be officially affiliated with matters on the pitch, but he’s still very visible even today. After he guided Liverpool to their previous league title in 1990, it was he who handed the Premier League trophy to Jordan Henderson in 2020.

That was a fitting touch for a man who won nine titles with The Reds as player and manager.

Dalglish also got his hands on three European Cups, five League Cups, three FA Cup’s and a European Super Cup while at Liverpool.

The last of those came as recently as 2012, as he lead The Reds to a League Cup triumph. That marked a remarkable return to the Anfield hotseat 20 years on from his departure.

Of course you can never say never, but that looks like being the final on-pitch contribution from Kenny.

Liverpool are now in a far better state to the last time he was called out of retirement to help his club. But should things go down the pan once more when Jurgen Klopp leaves, he’ll no doubt be ready and willing to help.

As things stand, Dalglish will be seventy-five when Klopp’s time at Anfield comes to and end. Still, you wouldn’t put it past him even at that age.

Kenny was made for Liverpool and Liverpool was made for him. They simply don’t make them like him anymore. Here’s to the next 45!
