Curtis Jones and Sami Hyypia have given their reaction to the news that Harvey Elliott has signed a new contract with Liverpool.

It was announced that Elliott has signed a new deal this afternoon. And judging from their reactions on Instagram, both Jones and Hyypia ‘loved’ the news.

Replying to Liverpool’s post about the extension, teammate Jones wrote “Love it” with a love heart emoji. Meanwhile, club legend Hyypia dropped the words, and simply went with the emoji. Pure love.

Despite having signed a contract last summer, Elliott now finds himself with another extension. It completes his transition into a full-time member of the senior squad and signals a big year ahead for the 19-year-old.

Elliott the midfielder Liverpool are crying out for?

At a time when a lot of Liverpool fans are hoping for a new midfielder, Thursday afternoon’s announcement is a reminder that they kind of already have one.

Elliott played just 346 minutes in the Premier League last season. 250 of those came within the opening four games of the year.

In that respect, it almost is like having a new player in the squad. It’s a well-worn trope which nobody likes to hear, but this year Elliott is almost like a new signing for Jurgen Klopp.

And what a signing to have. The youngster’s talent is abundant, he could become a truly special player in the years to come. Thanks to the news today, that will almost certainly be at Liverpool.

But for the time being, we do now need to start seeing a consistent return of meaningful contributions from Elliott.

He may still only be nineteen, but big things are expected of him, and have been for some time. It hasn’t quite fully taken off for him at Anfield in his three years at the club so far.

Elliott now has an opportunity to really cement himself in the Liverpool team though. He must take it with both hands.
