Franck Kessie could leave Barcelona for free this week, according to reports. Liverpool must pay attention to this one.
ESPN claims that Franck Kessie, along with Andreas Christensen, could leave Barcelona this week. The Catalonians signed both players on free transfers this summer but lack the funds to register the players.
Essentially, Barcelona need to ship players out in order to balance their books for La Liga. Without doing so, they’ll pile too much salary onto their books, preventing space for the new signings.
Thus both Kessie and Christensen could active clauses in their contracts that releases them. And that could happen as early as Saturday when Barcelona are set to face Rayo Vallecano.
Franck Kessie could leave Barcelona
Liverpool were linked with Kessie before he signed for Barcelona. That was the line from Marca, anyway – the links were never too strong, though.
But perhaps they should be now. Thiago’s injury highlights the lack of quality in midfield, with few players actually in their prime years. Thiago, Jordan Henderson and James Milner are all into their 30s. Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Fabio Carvalho are young players who lack experience.
Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are in those prime years but both face major questions over their reliability. Injuries are never far around the corner – let alone poor form.

Kessie, though, at 25, is a player right in that prime. In fact, he could get even better over the next few years – a five-year contract would lock down his best years.
And that’s exactly what Liverpool could use right now. We’ve written before that Kessie would be an ideal fit for the Reds and stand by that. Let alone on a free transfer towards the end of the window.
He’s a player who the BBC’s Pat Nevin labelled ‘very special’ last season – someone capable of things that few players are. If Kessie truly does leave Barcelona for free this week, the answer to Liverpool’s midfield prayers could simply fall into their lap.
