Liverpool reportedly had the fastest player in the Premier League this weekend, he beat everyone comfortably

Darwin Nunez reportedly hit the highest top speed in the Premier League this weekend. The Liverpool star is making waves.

No one should doubt why Liverpool spent big on Darwin Nunez this summer. His first two competitive appearances – both from the bench – have been eye-opening.

The performance against Manchester City in the Community Shield set a standard. Nunez entered the fray, won a penalty and scored Liverpool’s third in a 3-1 win. It doesn’t get much better.

And yet, he managed to repeat that against Fulham on Saturday. Nunez scored Liverpool’s first goal and assisted the second as the Reds drew 2-2. They’d have been lost without their new striker.

In fact, Liverpool just look more dynamic with Nunez on the pitch. His constant running, his physicality and his more subtle movements open up the game. There are natural partnerships with other players brewing and the team feels more aggressive.

And perhaps that surprises some. After all, Nunez is a different type of striker to what we’re used to. He’s not a False 9, he doesn’t particularly want to move with the ball and he instead looks for runs in behind at every turn.

People rightly wondered if that would mesh with Liverpool’s system. But one stat from the weekend’s Premier League action sums up exactly why it does.

Darwin Nunez hits top speed

Liverpool have built their success on pace from the wide positions, with wingers cutting inside and hitting every space they could with incredible pace. Well, now they have that centrally, too.

Swedish streaming service Viaplay claim that Nunez hit the highest top speed of any Premier League player this weekend. He registered 36.53 km per hour – a considerable way ahead of Danny Welbeck’s second-place effort (35.28km/h).

That’s an incredible weapon for Liverpool to have. Nunez isn’t just a physical problem for centre-backs but his pace can leave them for dead, too. How, exactly, do you play against that?

You can’t sit too deep because Nunez is such a threat in and around the box. He can hold the ball up well and his finishing is outstanding. But you can’t push too high up because of his pace.

Having such a versatile attacker is a Godsend for Jurgen Klopp. We can’t wait to see how Nunez ends up thriving in this Liverpool side. The only certainty is that he will.
