'He is one of them': Lijnders says £20m man is one of the few 'in the world' who could have improved Liverpool

Pep Lijnders believes few in the world could have improved Liverpool – but Thiago managed it. The coach clearly loves the midfielder.

Pep Lijnders has a new book out, as you might have heard – Intensity. It chronicles the season just gone and was officially released this week.

That saw the assistant manager handing out personalised copies to Liverpool players on Thursday. The club’s official Twitter account posted a video of a lot of these, as Lijnders complimented just about every player.

One player who received particularly high praise was Thiago, who joined the club in 2020. Lijnders hailed him as a rare kind of player – someone who could actually have made the Reds better.

“I think he was born in a rondo!” said Lijnders. “There are not many in the world who can make our team better but definitely, he is one of them.

“So we are really proud [to have him].”

Thiago improved Liverpool

There was a lot of talk when Thiago arrived that he was the wrong kind of player for Liverpool. The Reds liked a high-tempo, hard-working game and the Spaniard wanted to play more measure, possession football.

Injuries prevented Thiago from really delivering over the first six months of his Anfield career. By now, however, it’s clear that his style didn’t bring any problems – it gave Liverpool another dimension.

Thiago, after all, isn’t just a good player. He’s one of the absolute best in the world at what he does and might be the outright best. That’s the magic of elite players.

They don’t bring problems, they merely give you a superb asset to play with. They’ll look like a genius if you integrate them properly. Liverpool have done just that.

And it’s worth remembering as the Reds try and integrate Darwin Nunez. Now, he’s not a player with Thiago’s experience but he’s someone who plays in a different way to Liverpool’s incredibly successful style.

Like Thiago, though, it may not be a case of him struggling to adapt. Instead, the room is there for Nunez to bring another dimension to Liverpool and actually improve them.
