'Getting them at their best': Carragher names the two Liverpool players who can swing the title race

Jamie Carragher sees two players at Liverpool who can swing the title race this season. The pair could make all the difference.

Liverpool lost the title race by a single point last season. In fact, it took Manchester City scoring three goals in about 15 minutes to truly tear the trophy away from the Reds.

We’re talking incredibly small margins here, then, and that’s what Liverpool will have in mind this season. It doesn’t actually take too much change in order to swing things their way.

Now, there will be change. Sadio Mané left Liverpool, Raheem Sterling left City and both teams now boast elite physical strikers up top. Whether the two teams will improve as a result of that is up for debate.

But perhaps it’s less about the change in personnel. Jamie Carragher certainly thinks so and he believes that Liverpool simply having two players at their best could swing the title race.

“I think once Virgil van Dijk was up to speed last season, in the second half of the season, him and the goalkeeper were absolutely what you’d expect them to be,” Carragher told the Overlap. “Or what they’ve been for the last three or four years.

“I think if you’re getting them at their best at the very start of the season [Liverpool will be dangerous]. And don’t forget, every time Van Dijk has been at Liverpool for a full season, Liverpool have gotten over 90 points.”

Van Dijk started last season after nearly a year without competitive football. So no, he wasn’t quite at his elite level to kick off the campaign.

But as Carragher says, both he and Alisson really clicked post-New Year. The two of them were fantastic and we had Van Dijk down as the club’s best defender once again.

Having the two of them at their best from the get-go could be vital, then. It should lead to a better start and that could be all-important given the impact of the World Cup this year.

Pep Lijnders says the season will be about ‘two sprints’ and asks for a fast start at Liverpool. Van Dijk and Alisson can certainly help provide that – and maybe that’s enough to overhaul the point that separated them from glory last time.
