Liverpool have stepped up talks with Diogo Jota, according to reports. It comes after the Portuguese forward met expectations quickly.
This comes from the Telegraph. They claim that Liverpool are now stepping up talks with Diogo Jota over a new contract. This will come with a ‘significant’ pay rise for the forward after he met the Reds’ early expectations.
It’s a method of dealing with players that Liverpool like. They sign a player with many performance-related bonuses in their contract and a guarantee of a new deal if they perform. Jota has certainly earned the latter and the Reds hope to tie him down quickly.
His current deal expires in 2025 and Liverpool won’t want to move into the final two years of his contract without a renewal.
Liverpool step up Diogo Jota talks
No one is going to disagree with the thinking here. Tying down Jota should be one of Liverpool’s top priorities as his future with the club remains astonishingly bright.
Jota may have arrived with the look of a squad player but he rapidly established himself as one of the more dangerous goalscorers around. He’s still only 25, in fact, and is set to play a significant role in Liverpool’s future over the coming years.
The big question, in all honesty, is whether they can keep him happy. Luis Diaz and now Darwin Nunez offer competition for places and fill the two roles Jota does. Any sense that he was to take over from Sadio Mané as the left-sided player went with the former. His potential as a Roberto Firmino replacement went with the latter.
But at the end of the day, that’s life at Liverpool. Jota undoubtedly has the ability to play a considerable role and the club will want him around long-term. A significant pay rise is justified and hopefully, this is tied up quick.
