'He wanted': Klopp says 21-year-old Liverpool player was 'desperate' to play last night, could now be injured

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was itching to play at Anfield against Strasbourg last night.

Speaking via liverpoolfc.com, Klopp said the Liverpool man was ‘desperate’ to play in the friendly, but injury meant he had to sit it out. He also confirmed that Naby Keita missed the game through illness.

“Naby is ill, so no. Curtis, we have to see. [There] was no impact or whatever, so that always makes it a bit, ‘My god, what could it be?” said the Liverpool boss.

“We had no time; he felt it today and he wanted to play desperately, but then the medical department said no and that we needed to make further tests. We will do that tomorrow and then we will know more.”

Frustration once again for unlucky Jones

After a stop-start year last time out, Jones could do without the same happening this season.

The 21-year-old made big strides in 2020/21, playing 34 times in all competitions, scoring four goals. It was hoped that he would kick on again last season, but an injury towards the start of the campaign meant he could never fully get going.

Of course, Liverpool’s midfield isn’t the easiest place for a young player to get meaningful minutes. All credit must go to Jones for forcing himself in in the first place, and he still made 27 appearances last season.

It does always feel as though he has much more to give, though. His talent is clear, which makes it all the more frustrating when he suffers these set-backs.

He barely featured in the Community Shield on Saturday. As a result, last night would have been the perfect chance to show that he can hit his own lofty targets for the season.

In what turned out to be a really young team, he could have been one of the senior leaders.

Instead, as with Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool will have to wait to learn the extent of the damage. It isn’t ideal with just five days until the start of the season.

Klopp has so far chosen not to add to his midfield ranks this summer. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain already reportedly facing months on the side-line, perhaps a lengthy injury to Jones may have to alter that thinking.
