Lucas Leiva took to Twitter to praise Darwin Nunez after the Uruguayan‘s Liverpool debut. Nunez made quite the impression.
Darwin Nunez came on as a second-half substitute against Manchester City today and wasted little time in showing what he can bring. He should have scored shortly after coming on, in fact, as he raced through on goal.
Ederson, it has to be said, came out rapidly and closed Nunez down well. His face then provided an expert save as the striker tried to lift the ball into the goal.
But Nunez wasn’t done. First, he won a penalty as Rúben Dias stopped his header with a hand. The Uruguayan then scored Liverpool’s third goal with a low short-range header.
Even if none of the moments were displays of sensational skill, the fact is that Liverpool looked dangerous with Nunez on the pitch. He became the centre of their attack and City weren’t entirely sure how to handle him. In short, they couldn’t.
Lucas Leiva on Darwin Nunez
One watching fan was former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva. He Tweeted footage of his son celebrating Mohamed Salah’s penalty before offering his quick opinion on Nunez’s start.
“New boy [Nunez] looks good doesn’t he Lucas!,” one fan asked.
“Yes he does!!” replied Lucas. “Brilliant player.”
There was a lot to shout about on Saturday then as Liverpool lifted the Community Shield. While it’s still really a glorified friendly, the Reds looked sharp and watching rivals won’t like what they saw.
Liverpool should only get better, too, as Nunez can’t possibly be at his best yet. Give him more time to develop an understanding with the likes of Salah and the Reds will boast an incredible striker.
More than anything, Liverpool just feel more versatile and less predictable with their new no.27. We can’t wait to see what the season brings.
