Virgil van Dijk exploded at his teammate on 25 minutes for dropping Liverpool's standards vs Man City

Virgil van Dijk was not happy with Adrián for his decision in the 25th minute against Manchester City. Liverpool’s standards dropped.

Liverpool went into their Community Shield meeting with Manchester City today knowing full well that they weren’t at their best. Alisson Becker missed the game, after all, and Caoimhín Kelleher wasn’t ready to deputise.

That meant a start for Adrián – a player who featured just once last season. That’s hardly ideal as the Spaniard is now a distant third choice in goal.

Liverpool, though, needed him to keep out the Premier League champions and their new blockbuster signing. Now, Adrián has been in a similar position before but that was three years ago. This would be a tough task.

Because playing in goal for Liverpool isn’t just about making saves. You need to involve yourself in the possession game, too – something Alisson does as well as anyone.

And we saw an example of just how high the standards are on 25 minutes at the King Power stadium. Adrián received the ball inside the six-yard box with a bit of pressure on him. He then proceeded to ping the ball down the middle of the pitch but straight to City.

They mounted an immediate attack which Liverpool just about dealt with. But that didn’t stop Virgil van Dijk from being furious.

Virgil van Dijk and Adrián

Van Dijk shouted at Adrián immediately for his decision to kick it up the pitch. The Dutchman had pulled wide left, after all, and was screaming for the square pass when the goalkeeper had the ball.

Now, in Adrián’s defence, 99% of teams would be fine with him doing that. It’s just a sign of how incredibly high the standards are at Liverpool right now that Van Dijk had such a problem with it.

But at the end of the day, those standards are why Liverpool have had such incredible success in recent years.
