Bayern Munich new signing Matthijs de Ligt has claimed that Liverpool’s Virgil Van Dijk is one of the best centre-backs in the world.
The Bayern star praised the Liverpool man whilst speaking to ESPN FC. When asked whether his partnership with Van Dijk for Holland was the best defensive duo in the world, de Ligt remained coy.
“Could be, I don’t know that’s not for us to decide or for us to say,” said the £66m man.
“I think Virgil is obviously one of the best centre-backs in the world, he’s amazing. He’s showed already for a couple of years in Liverpool that he is one of the best, or even the best. If we’ll be the best, I don’t know, the most important thing is that we play good as a team.”
The dream that was never going to become reality
If reports from this summer were to be believed, Liverpool were recently exploring the option of bringing de Ligt to Anfield.
The 22-year-old was available for transfer having failed to negotiate a new contract at Juventus. There were suggestions from Europe that Liverpool were even ‘dreaming’ of pairing Van Dijk and de Ligt together.
In truth, it always seemed rather farfetched. Liverpool don’t need a centre-back at the moment, especially one as costly as the Dutchman.
It could have been something special to see he and Virgil, or even he and Ibrahima Konate, partnered together at Anfield. But it was never going to happen.
Instead, de Ligt now joins Sadio Mane as one of Bayern’s big investments this summer.
Mane’s Senegal team will of course face Holland at this year’s World Cup. The former Liverpool man will be in a unique position having perhaps got the inside track on both of his opponents best defenders. He may need it, de Ligt and Van Dijk really are a smashing looking partnership.
The Dutch aren’t seen as one of the big favourites to lift the trophy in December. If they do defy the odds, their two defensive superstars will be a big reason why.
