Liverpool will now be very relieved that Adrián chose to stay with the club. He may now face Manchester City in the Community Shield.
There was a genuine chance that Adrián may have left Liverpool this summer. The Spaniard admitted in an interview with Cadena Ser back in May that he’d ‘evaluate things’ once last season finished and potentially ask to leave the club.
After all, Adrián barely featured across the 2021/22 campaign as he’s firmly the club’s third-choice goalkeeper. He’ll only ever play when both Alisson Becker and Caoimhín Kelleher are out injured – hardly ideal for a 35-year-old.
In fact, Adrián may be giving up his final years of senior football in order to essentially just train with Liverpool. If he’d asked for a transfer away, we imagine he’d have got it.
Thankfully, Adrián chose to stay with Liverpool – and the Reds will be relieved.

But the Irishman is also injured, having not featured at all in pre-season. It seems highly unlikely that Kelleher bounces back to start at the King Power, then.
Thus Adrián is needed – it’s either him or a wildly inexperienced youth player like Harvey Davies. Liverpool will need their Spaniard and for that, they can only be thankful that he chose to stick around.
We really didn’t think Adrián would, with his old club Real Betis linked with a transfer. Even sitting on the bench there would be an upgrade from the stands at Anfield.
But as ‘luck’ would have it, Adrián will almost certainly start for Liverpool against their title rivals and with the season’s first silverware on the line.
