Liverpool have given 18-year-old left-back Luke Chambers a new contract. The defender has impressed this summer.
Liverpool announced on Tuesday that Luke Chambers has a new contract with the club. It comes after Chambers featured on the Reds’ pre-season tour as a third-choice left-back.
The 18-year-old helped England’s Under 19s win the European Championship before that tour and this news caps off a truly remarkable summer. With Owen Beck out on loan with Famalicao, Chambers could find himself with a game or two this season.
He’s certainly made a big enough impression to earn that spot.
Luke Chambers earns a new contract
Chambers has already made a name for himself at academy level, captaining the Under 18s on occasion. He’s bagged goals as a penalty-taker, too, while operating as both a left-back and centre-back.
That kind of versatility will always help a young player go far. As will impressing the senior players and Chambers managed to do that while on tour in Asia.
“This kid impresses me a lot,” Kostas Tsimikas told Liverpoolfc.com of Chambers. “He’s a very, very good player and always very focused in the training.”
It’s the sort of glowing review that will raise eyebrows at Liverpool. Chambers wasn’t even around with the seniors for all that long but did enough to really catch Tsimikas’s eye.
Now, Chambers needs to make sure he’s training at that level more often. He won’t find a better selection of left-backs to learn from, after all, with both Tsimikas and Andy Robertson available to guide him. Let alone someone like James Milner who, as with Chambers, manages to prove himself in multiple positions, including left-back.
And so the 18-year-old is one to watch going forward. Liverpool plainly see something in him with this new contract, while the likes of Tsimikas do, too. Breaking into the Reds’ setup isn’t exactly easy but Chambers is off to a great start.
