Report: Man United will fail to sign 'incredible' talent for £51m, Liverpool could take advantage

Manchester United will fail Antony from Ajax, according to reports. Liverpool could take advantage of the situation.

This Mirror carries quotes from Ajax sporting director, Gerry Hamstra as he vehemently denies that the club will sell Antony this summer. That comes as Erik Ten Hag has repeatedly turned to his old club for new signings.

Thus Manchester United will fail to sign Antony this summer. They’ve targeted the Brazilian for some time now and, in fact, he was one of the first players linked with the club when Ten Hag took over.

“I know some of our players are still targeted and they are trying to pull them away,” said Hamstra. “It is obvious, we have capital on the pitch. But we are keeping the squad we have left. Nobody is going anywhere now.”

That’ll be a blow to Ten Hag, who openly says Antony is an ‘incredible’ player. There’s little doubt that he wants the winger at Old Trafford.

Instead, this feels like a situation Liverpool can take advantage of.

Man United will fail to sign Antony

Yahoo Sports have recently mentioned Liverpool as interested in Antony. They claim there’s strong interest and that follows on from reports in June from Fabrizio Romano. He says that the Reds have tracked Antony for a while now.

As for a price? Romano has it at £51m – a massive amount for a player Liverpool can’t quite justify. But maybe they can in a year.

There’s a lot to love about Antony’s talent, after all. He’s a fantastic player and one Liverpool are right to buy into. They just have so many forwards already. One would surely have to leave to make room and perhaps that happens in 2023 – Roberto Firmino’s contract will expire, after all.

Signing Darwin Nunez suggests Liverpool will move away from using a False 9, for one thing. Bringing in Antony to backup – and later replace – Mohamed Salah makes sense as a Firmino replacement, then. It honestly makes quite a bit of sense.

Now, will Liverpool have the money? We’re not sure about that but at least it sounds as though the option to sign Antony in 2023 will still be there.
