West Ham United want Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, according to reports, but Liverpool must only sell if Matheus Nunes joins them.

The Irish Mirror claims that West Ham United are considering a move for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. They haven’t decided whether or not to go for it but they see the potential for a £10m deal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, after all, is now in the final 12 months of his contract. He can leave for free next year and that could persuade Liverpool to sell, even on the cheap. While it seems obvious that they’re happy to keep the player, potential suitors can certainly tempt them.

We’re of the mindset, though, that Liverpool should only sell if a replacement comes in. They might even have that replacement in mind – Matheus Nunes. Correio de Manha claims they’re looking at the 23-year-old and he’s cost around £42m all-in.

And in this specific scenario, we think Liverpool can land the perfect summer.

Liverpool can finalise perfect summer if Matheus Nunes joins

Oxlade-Chamberlain is a fine player and one Liverpool can certainly use next season. But his role isn’t irreplaceable. The Reds now boast Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho as midfielders who can bring the ball forward and get involved in attack. While having Oxlade-Chamberlain’s experience is great, the squad is well-stocked.

We wouldn’t give him up for just £10m, though – not unless Liverpool could immediately improve their squad in other ways. They’d need to find a way to replace that experience, essentially, and we think they can do that by bolstering their options with a more all-around midfielder.

We’ve written before that Nunes can be that player. He might even be perfect for it, in fact, and we do think the squad would look stronger with this swap. Liverpool would still have plenty of attacking options in midfield and in Nunes, they’d have the kind of Jordan Henderson/Gini Wijnaldum-type midfielder that Klopp likes.

On top of it all, Liverpool would lower the average age of their first-team options. That’s another bonus as they reportedly look towards the future.
