'Great speed': Joel Matip suggests he's been seriously impressed by one Liverpool player's pace over pre-season

Liverpool defender Joel Matip has praised the pace of new signing Darwin Nunez over pre-season.

In quotes via The Athletic after Liverpool beat RB Leipzig 5-0, Matip said he was really happy with what he saw from the striker yesterday.

“Everybody is really happy for him. Great finish, great speed — it will be really difficult for our opponents,” said the centre-back.

Darwin certainly made life very difficult for Leipzig. They just couldn’t get to grips with him as he buried four goals in forty-five minutes.

Liverpool roll out the red carpet for Darwin

It’s great to see just how invested the Liverpool squad are in making sure Nunez is feeling settled at his new club.

The delight from the players was clear to see as the 23-year-old got off the mark yesterday. And following the game, they were quick to show their appreciation for a pretty astonishing performance.

After some difficulty dealing with some online abuse, Nunez looked to be getting in his own head a little.

As a result, the best thing that could have happened yesterday was for Liverpool to get a penalty within minutes of him coming on the pitch. He barely had time to think about it before he had his first goal.

Credit must go to Mohamed Salah for allowing the new signing to take the kick. It just goes to show the camaraderie which Nunez is walking into at Liverpool.

The team is very much the star of the show. Although there are those, like Salah, who draw the attention of most the headlines, the team is greater than the sum of its parts. If Nunez didn’t realise that before, then he will now.

He’ll need his teammates once again as he begins his life in Liverpool. In unfamiliar surroundings and being unable to speak the language, he’ll have to seek advice from those who can show him the ropes.

Thankfully, with the characters in this Liverpool squad, he shouldn’t be short of offers.
