RB Leipzig have sent a Twitter message to Ibrahima Konate ahead of their friendly with Liverpool this evening.
Posting on their official Twitter page, Leipzig’s message to Konate shows just how well-liked the Liverpool star was at his former club.
“A reunion with friends is always nice. Especially if it’s Ibou,” the message translates as.
The German club posted two further messages to the Liverpool centre-back before they’re due to meet in Leipzig tonight.
Konate’s character shines through
Liverpool are well-known to sign players based not only on their footballing ability, but on their character too.
In Konate’s case, this shines through ever so clearly. The big defender always seems to have a smile on his face and has an incredibly infectious laugh.
Since joining The Reds last summer, he seems have enjoyed every single minute at his new club. He’s taken to Liverpool like a duck to water, and that really comes across.
As well as his positive character, Konate has also made huge strides as a footballer since leaving Leipzig.
Big things to come in 2022/23
At Leipzig, Konate wasn’t often in the team. Injury and the presence of players like Dayot Upamecano often relegated him to the bench.
In truth, that has been the case at Liverpool so far, too. But towards the end of last season, the 23-year-old was starting to show that he can be the long-term option that he was signed to be.
Konate was Liverpool’s best player as they lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final. He also scored a big goal in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City before playing the full 120 minutes against Chelsea in the final.
To top off a quite stunning first season at Liverpool, he received his first international call-up in June. Now a full international for France, he’ll have his eye on a spot in Didier Deschamps World Cup squad.
The signs are that he’ll start next season as Virgil Van Dijk’s regular partner in the Liverpool defence. If he keeps improving in the way he has been, he’ll be difficult for Deschamps to ignore.
Leipzig will see a different player tonight to the one they sold 12 months ago. But as a person, it seems as though despite his recent successes, Ibou has stayed exactly the same.
