Liverpool have made over £20m this summer by selling three players they didn’t even use in 2022. It’s fantastic business from the Reds.

Liverpool have had a wonderful summer transfer window so far. They’ve struck the deals they wanted to strike, got the players they were after and cleaned up the squad quite a bit.

The standout deals are for Darwin Nunez and Sadio Mané, of course. Liverpool got their no.1 target from Benfica but lost one of their greatest ever forwards. Still, they managed to do both deals the way they wanted to.

Perhaps more interesting, though, is how Liverpool have moved on bit-part players. Takumi Minamino joining AS Monaco, for instance, brings in quite a bit of money for a player Jurgen Klopp rarely used.

But the Reds go even further than that – they’ve now made over £20m on players they didn’t even use in 2022. Now that’s how you do business.

Liverpool make over £20m on unused players

Liverpool’s big sale in that regard was for Neco Williams. He joins Nottingham Forest, having spent the first half of 2022 on loan with Fulham. The Athletic put Williams’ fee at £17m – a brilliant sale after the Reds replaced him with Calvin Ramsay.

Tuesday saw another loanee depart, too. Liverpool sold Ben Davies leave for Rangers, bringing in £4m for a player Klopp didn’t use once. They made a decent profit on the centre-back on top of that, having signed him 18 months ago.

Finally, there’s Taiwo Awoniyi. Liverpool actually sold him a year ago to Union Berlin but included a 10% sell-on clause in the deal. His move to Forest sends an extra £1.5m the Reds’ way, per the Liverpool Echo.

And so that’s around £22.5m of ‘bonus’ money. Liverpool weren’t using these players at all – in fact, one wasn’t even on the books anymore. It’s money that instantly covers the Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho transfers, too.

Yet another example, then, of the Reds doing business brilliantly.
