Liverpool players took to Instagram to send their farewell messages to Ben Davies as he joins Rangers. The 26-year-old had a tough 18 months.
Ben Davies officially joined Rangers on Tuesday for around £4m. It brings an end to a strange time for the centre-back, who joined Liverpool 18 months ago but never played a game.
While the club have made a very decent profit on Davies, it’s hardly the outcome everyone wanted when he arrived from Preston North End. But while the fans haven’t had much of a chance to take to Davies, the players at Liverpool have.
They showed that with a series of farewell messages on Instagram as the 26-year-old said his goodbye to Liverpool.
Ben Davies joins Rangers
Davies goes down in a select group players, then, who signed for Liverpool and never actually played for them. It’s not how anyone predicted things would go back in February 2021 when he arrived.
After all, he joined during a centre-back crisis that saw all of Liverpool’s senior options ruled out for the season. Davies was supposed to cover that, if only for six months of football. Instead, Jurgen Klopp never got him on the pitch.
By the summer, it was fairly clear that Davies would never played for the club. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez all returned, while Ibrahima Konaté joined from RB Leipzig. The opportunity was gone and a loan to Sheffield United followed.
Now Davies can get his career back on track, though, as he competes in Scotland and Europe with Rangers. For a player who has already proven his quality in the Championship, it feels like the right move for all parties.
Just a signing that didn’t work out – fortunately, everyone has landed on their feet.
