Jurgen Klopp shared his thoughts on Liverpool selling Ben Davies to Rangers on Tuesday. The defender leaves after 18 months at Anfield.
Liverpool confirmed on Tuesday that Ben Davies has moved to Rangers on a permanent deal. This comes around 18 months after his arrival from Preston North End – and zero first-team appearances.
It’s a transfer that Jurgen Klopp is clearly thrilled with, though. He’s happy that Davies will get his career back on track after a very difficult time with Liverpool.
“Super move. Very positive outcome,” the manager told Liverpoolfc.com. “Rangers is a fantastic club, a big club. Ben belongs on a big stage for sure. European football as well.
“This presents a proper opportunity to demonstrate his quality and composure. As a person he’s as good a guy as you could hope to meet.
“It’s a smart piece of recruitment from Giovanni van Bronckhorst, to be honest. Perfect for all parties. He has himself an accomplished defender, who is entering his peak years and whose character is top drawer.”
Ben Davies to Rangers
Davies arrived right at the end of the January transfer window in 2020 in an effort from Liverpool to stabilise their season. Injuries decimated Klopp’s defensive options, putting all three of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip out of action.
Dejan Lovren’s departure the previous summer left Liverpool without any other senior options at the back. Fabinho deputised and we saw both Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips get games but Klopp plainly didn’t trust them.

Instead, he signed Davies and Ozan Kabak to bolster things. However, things didn’t work out. Davies never got a game and Kabak failed to impress – it was Williams and Phillips who finished the season as the centre-back pairing.
Davies, then, has seen his career stall dramatically over the last 18 months. For a player Liverpool liked enough to buy, a move like this to Rangers feels like the perfect opportunity to get things back on track.
Klopp clearly sees things that way and hopefully, we can finally see more of what convinced the Reds to sign Davies in the first place.
