Report: Clubs from three different countries are all now trying to sign 'excellent' Liverpool defender on loan

Liverpool have received offers from three different countries to take Sepp van den Berg on-loan next season.

That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who claim that sides from the Premier League, La Liga and the Bundesliga all want the Liverpool defender on-loan.

There is no suggestion of who the clubs in question are, or whether Liverpool are considering any offers.

van den Berg had spent the last 18 months enjoying a stellar spell at Preston North End before returning to Anfield for pre-season.

van den Berg ready for the next step

There will have been one or two Liverpool fans surprised to see van den Berg looking so assured against Crystal Palace on Friday.

The 20-year-old had cut a nervous and intimidated figure when turning out for Liverpool as an 18-year-old.

Now, after a-year-and-a-half in the Championship, he looks ready to go to the next level. Physically, he’s much bigger, and the calmness with which he played against Palace was a very welcome sight.

Yes, it was only half an hour in pre-season, but it was enough to suggest that he could still have a future at Liverpool.

At this point, a move to any of the leagues mentioned would be a big step forward, but one van den Berg looks ready for. He’s been playing men’s football for a while having played in the Eredivisie as a 16-year-old, but he needed the spell at Preston to really look the part.

The Dutchman was impressive throughout his stay at Deepdale. During his spell at the back end of the 2020/21 season, he was called ‘excellent’ by then manager Alex Neil via Lancs Live, and he only got better from there.

van den Berg came back clearly confident that he can make an impression on Jurgen Klopp. It remains to be seen whether he has managed that or not, but even if he has, it’s unlikely to translate into first-team minutes.

There’s simply too many defenders ahead of the Holland U21 international at the moment. As a result, a loan move seems like the smart option. Impress again, and could take further strides towards his ultimate goal.
