'I'm always looking': Fabinho shares what keeps getting shouted in Liverpool training, was confusing him

The Liverpool players keep confusing Fabinho in training by calling for Fabio Carvalho.

Speaking to The Athletic, Fabinho said that he’s now called ‘Flaco’ by his teammates on a full-time basis. After he kept getting confused with shouts for Carvalho, the group made a call to make a distinction between them.

“It was Virgil who started that (calling him Flaco). With Fabio Carvalho joining us this summer, everyone has been shouting ‘Fabio’ in training and I’m always looking around thinking they are talking about me,” said the Brazilian.

“So now they’ve said, ‘Right, Fab, you’re now just Flaco, and he’s Fabio’. I’m OK with that.”

Another trick up Liverpool’s sleeve perhaps?

It might sound like a benign point, but this could potentially be a problem for Liverpool.

The lines of communication have to be clear at all times. When you play the game at a pace that Liverpool do, there can be no room for such confusion.

From what we’ve seen in pre-season so far, it seems as though Carvalho may play minutes in midfield for Liverpool. It wouldn’t do to have the two players confusing each other whilst playing in the same area of the pitch.

As Fabinho is the more senior player, it might have been expected that it would be Carvalho to bend. But Flaco seems like an easy-going individual. Better to let the 19-year-old bed in and feel like himself by being called his own name.

In that respect, the presence of someone like Fabinho should help him massively. Having been born and spent a chunk of his childhood in Portugal, Carvalho is fluent in the language.

Fabinho, being Brazilian, obviously is too. If they do end up playing alongside each other in midfield, as well as with another Portuguese speaking in Thiago Alcantara, they could confuse the opposition by speaking in their mother tongue.

Yet another tactic for The Reds to bamboozle their opponents. As if they needed any more.
