'Work left to be done': £52m forward makes surprise claim as Liverpool reportedly eye his signature

Christopher Nkunku made a surprise claim this week amid reported interest from Liverpool. The Frenchman signed a new contact with RB Leipzig.

There was plenty of speculation around Christopher Nkunku this summer. The Frenchman was absolutely sensational for RB Leipzig across the 2021/22 season, scoring 20 Bundesliga goals and assisting another 13.

That’s the kind of form that brings attention to you and RB Leipzig reacted perfectly – they renewed Nkunku’s contract. It’s something that would have been a big surprise if not for reports that the contract included a release clause for next summer.

Fabrizio Romano claims that £52m would trigger that clause in 2023, should any teams still want Nkunku. That, on the face of it, explains why the player was willing to spurn interest from ‘bigger’ clubs and re-sign with Leipzig. He’d stay for a year before getting his move – everyone is happy.

Only, that might not be the case. In an interview with Kicker, Nkunku claims that he ‘didn’t sign the deal just to leave next year’. He suggests that he’ll stick around for some time yet.

“I conciously extended my contract – I didn’t extend my contract to leave the club next year,” said Nkunku. “I know I feel very comfortable at RB and I still have work left to be done here.”

Interest in Christopher Nkunku from Liverpool

ESPN claim that Liverpool are one of the teams looking at Nkunku. The 2023 transfer window is a perfect time to sign him, too, given we see him as a Roberto Firmino replacement.

The Brazilian’s contract expires that summer and Nkunku could slot right in. But his open desire to continue with Leipzig throws a spanner into those plans – it’s a surprise to all.

But there is the possibility that Nkunku is simply telling Leipzig what they want to hear. It’s also worth noting that his plans right now could change dramatically in a year. Especially, we should say, if a club put a lot of money on the table for him.

So we won’t quite write off a transfer, even if it sounds more difficult than we thought. Nkunku is a special player and one who would suit Liverpool very well, after all.
