Liverpool are making a surprise move to sign Ajax’s Brazilian winger Antony.
That’s according to Yahoo Esportes, who claim that Liverpool ‘continue to talk’ to the Dutch giants about signing their player.
It’s claimed that although Manchester United were the favourites for Antony, Liverpool have recently ‘entered the game strongly.’
Sao Paulo are reportedly watching developments with interest. The Brazilian club are said to be due a 20% piece of any profit Ajax make on the 22-year-old.

Hard to see it happening
This would be a surprising move from Liverpool for a number of reasons. Firstly, reports have quite strongly intimated that The Reds will be doing no further business this summer.
Secondly, if Liverpool were to do any more business, it would surely be for a midfielder. That’s the area of the pitch that Jurgen Klopp is potentially lacking in and tried to address by attempting to sign Aurelien Tchouameni this summer.
Thirdly, Mohamed Salah has just signed a new contract. Antony is in the same mould as the Egyptian – a left-footed right-winger who loves to cut inside.
It seems unlikely in the extreme that Liverpool would pay the reported £52m transfer fee for a back-up player.

Of course, Antony is a terrific player, and would be a good addition. Arsenal legend Thierry Henry is a fan, claiming on CBS Sports (23/02/22) that the Brazil international ‘delivers every single time’ for Ajax.
That’s not a bad endorsement to have in your back pocket, and there are plenty of reports that suggest Liverpool feel the same way.
Still, for all the reasons given, and possibly more, we’d be shocked to see this go any further.
