Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag were seen enjoying a joke with Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders before yesterday’s game in Bangkok.
As seen on the Liverpool FC official YouTube channel, Klopp and ten Hag greeted each other like old friends when meeting in the tunnel.
Lijnders then arrives, and the three men share a laugh together in-front of the Manchester United changing room.
It isn’t often you see a Liverpool and United manager getting along so well. Perhaps Liverpool bosses of times gone by wouldn’t have got away with it. But such is his standing, Jurgen Klopp can pretty much laugh with whoever he likes!
The Jurgen effect
If some fans and pundits were upset with Liverpool and Manchester City getting on so well, they certainly won’t like this.
Liverpool and United are still bitter rivals, despite the disparity in current fortunes. In the past, to fraternise so closely with the Old Trafford club would be seen as nothing short of a scandal.
Times have changed, though. Besides, when you’ve got a manager as amiable and well-liked as Jurgen, this is bound to happen. The Liverpool boss commands respect throughout the football world.
As for Lijnders, he and ten Hag are countrymen who’s paths are likely to have crossed before.
Had this been after the 4-0 drubbing that Liverpool received, maybe then there would have been a few questions to answer.
But still, this is pre-season. You can bet that when the real business starts, the niceties between the managers won’t be quite so nice.
