Liverpool are in discussion with Blackburn Rovers over a move for Ben Davies to leave Anfield.
That’s according to The Daily Mail. They claim that the two clubs are ‘continuing talks’ over a deal for the defender to leave Liverpool this summer.
Davies has been left out of the squad for Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia, as a move appears close.
There’s no mention at this stage whether the deal for the 26-year-old would be on a permanent basis, or a loan move.
One of the strangest Liverpool careers of recent times
In the interest of all parties, hopefully Blackburn’s move for Davies will be in order to give him a permanent home.
The centre-back’s Liverpool career is no doubt one of the strangest we’ve seen for some time. Although he’s reportedly taking home around £60k-a-week (Spotrac), he needs to get his career back on track.
Few can blame him for having his head turned by Liverpool’s interest in January 2020. But he would have likely been better off making a more lateral move from Preston North End.
Since joining The Reds, he has made a solitary appearance in a Liverpool shirt. Officially, that appearance won’t count either, as it was in a pre-season friendly last August.
To be fair, a lot of that could be down to injury. When he joined Liverpool, he did so as the only fit senior centre-back alongside fellow new arrival Ozan Kabak.
But it soon transpired that Davies wasn’t fully fit. Had he been, he would have likely had games to prove himself in the team. Instead, he was deemed to be not quite physically ready to play.
As a result, Nat Phillips was given his chance and never looked back. Rhys Williams soon followed as Davies spent time on the treatment table.
It’s imperative that Davies gets himself a move away this summer, as he won’t figure at all if he stays at Liverpool. He reportedly had hopes of having a future at Anfield. But now almost twenty-seven, he needs to get going again after this strange career interlude.
A loan move to Sheffield United last season didn’t quite work out, let’s hope that Blackburn can offer him better.
