Jurgen Klopp won’t repeat his tactic from Tuesday when Liverpool continue their pre-season against Crystal Palace, according to reports.
This comes from the Athletic. They claim that Liverpool’s pre-season is very much going to plan despite the 4-0 loss against Manchester United on Tuesday.
The Reds treated the game entirely as a warm-up, essentially. Jurgen Klopp twice changed the XI on the pitch, giving 32 players a chance to get out there. The result was players getting around 30 minutes each as they kicked-off their pre-season.
That was in contrast to United. Whereas Liverpool only returned to training three days ago, Erik Ten Hag has had his players back for a week. As a result, he made his changes at half-time and left his best players out for longer.
And that’s set to be Liverpool’s own strategy in their next game against Crystal Palace. The Athletic claim that Klopp will leave players out for longer as they gradually get up to speed. Several stars will play for 45 minutes.
Liverpool continue pre-season against Crystal Palace
Pre-season is still going to plan, then. Sure, Liverpool would prefer not to lose 4-0 against United but the result wasn’t the important thing about that game. The Reds simply wanted to get their players fitter as they gradually ramp up their preparation for 2022/23.
So in that sense, things went well. Liverpool gave decent game-time to 32 different players and handed out a couple of debuts. They were chasing the bare minimum, essentially, and that’s what they got.
Hopefully, the extended minutes for first-team players against Palace lead to a better result, of course. Many players won’t feature at all – presumably youth players – and so there should be a lot more cohesion in the side.
But again, fitness is the important thing and Liverpool can certainly get their players that.
