Young Liverpool goalkeeper Marcelo Pitaluga claimed the Man of the Match award for Macclesfield FC last night on his debut for the club.
As per Macclesfield’s Twitter page, the Liverpool youngster’s brilliant debut concluded with a 2-0 win over Championship side West Brom.
Pitaluga has headed to the non-league side as he looks to continue his development towards being a genuine option at Liverpool.
And it couldn’t have got off to a better start. It may only be pre-season, but this will be a massive confidence boost to the Brazilian as he looks to establish himself in the team.
The perfect start for Pitaluga
A few eyebrows were raised when Pitaluga swapped Anfield for Moss Rose earlier this month. The teenager is highly rated by Liverpool and could perhaps have landed himself at a bigger club.
But the benefits of playing regularly can’t be underestimated. It’s also become clear that Pitaluga will continue to train with Liverpool throughout the season, as Macclesfield are part-time.
In that respect, he’s getting the best of both worlds. Regular football in a mens league, whilst still maintaining constant contact with his coaches and elite players at Liverpool.
Also, it’s worth bearing in mind the level of opposition he faced yesterday. West Brom were maybe fielding a second-string team, but this was a Premier League club not too long ago.
For Pitaluga to show up so strongly, so early on in his loan spell is really encouraging.
There is obviously a reason why Jurgen Klopp called the Brazil U17 international ‘incredible’ via The Guardian earlier this year.
Hopefully there’s a few more performances like this on throughout season. Caoimhin Kelleher’s future at Liverpool is a little up in the air, while Adrian’s contract will expire next summer. If Pitaluga can catch the eye whilst still training at Kirkby, he could move himself up the pecking order for next season.
