Jordan Henderson says one teammate has 'performed phenomenally well' and can replace Sadio Mané

Jordan Henderson appears unworried about Sadio Mané leaving Liverpool this summer. He’s backing one teammate to help replace him.

Liverpool sold Sadio Mané this summer – their biggest exit for years. It’s even bigger than Philippe Coutinho leaving in a club-record deal, given the Reds didn’t actually have much success with the Brazilian.

Mané’s exit is different. This is a vital player leaving who helped Liverpool win every major trophy – their most successful side in years has changed massively here.

So what’s the attitude within the squad? Jordan Henderson gave a little insight this week as he talked about Mané leaving. The captain seems to believe Liverpool can handle it quite easily.

Jordan Henderson on Sadio Mané leaving

“It was always going to be difficult losing Sadio because he’s world-class — one of the best forwards in the world,” said Henderson, per the Athletic. “We were sad to see him leave but we wish him all the best.

“For us, you look at the forward line and it’s still very strong. We have brought new players in but we also have world-class players who performed last season.

“Luis Diaz performed phenomenally well, look at Mo [Salah] and the numbers he’s got, and obviously Bobby [Firmino] is a big plus coming back from injury last season. Darwin is hopefully a huge player for us going forward, and we have some young players coming through as well. Competition for places drives people on.”

We’ll start with a little shoutout to Diogo Jota, who slipped under the radar here. The Portuguese star could end up being the true Mané replacement.

But it’s also clear that Luis Diaz will play a huge role. As Henderson says, the Colombian was phenomenal last season and clicked into the squad as well as anyone ever has. He looked fantastic from start to finish and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

The jury is still out on Nunez, of course, as he’s only just arrived. Thus it is Diaz who Liverpool will hope can inject a little of what Mané has over the years. Salah and Firmino will play their roles as they always have – now they need a left-winger who can form a trio.

Diaz will be that player, with Jota offering a more versatile role across the front-three. If the 25-year-old can step up and perform as he did post-January, Liverpool will quickly move on from Mané.
