Joel Matip can already see how Darwin Nunez will change Liverpool. The Cameroonian is excited about his new teammate.
Darwin Nunez has only been at Liverpool for a few days but he’s getting teammates excited. Joel Matip is the latest to talk about the Uruguayan, saying that he’s going to shake things up at Anfield.
“He made my life quite hard,” Matip told Liverpoolfc.com. “So I’m really happy that he’s wearing our shirt.
“A lot of quality and I’m looking forward to seeing him scoring goals for us. I think it’s a different kind of speciality – physically, speed. And he will score goals, I’m absolutely sure.
“He will just give us an extra power player to really go for everything.”
Darwin Nunez will change Liverpool
We’ve all gotten so used to seeing Liverpool operate with a False 9 under Jurgen Klopp. The boss moved Roberto Firmino into the role pretty quickly and never really looked back.
And that’s had a big effect on the Reds’ playing style. For instance, they’ve got away with a midfield that lacks traditional playmakers because of the centre-forward dropping deep. Firmino – and at time, Sadio Mané – has moved back to link with midfield, meaning Klopp could use workhorses and deep-lying midfielders.
Similarly, the wingers thrive when there’s a striker who drags centre-backs away. That’s led to Mané and Mohamed Salah scoring for fun.
Having Nunez up top, then, changes things. As Matip says, they now have a physical target up top who allows them to challenge defenders more. We’ll see more high balls, maybe even more crosses and an ability to get things moving quicker.
The big question is whether that hurts the midfield and forces Klopp to ask for attacking midfielders. We think that’s what will happen and the young players in the squad suggest Liverpool planned for it.
All we know for sure, though, is that Nunez’s arrival will change things at Anfield. We can’t wait to see exactly how.
