'That's how you build a team': Jurgen Klopp is ecstatic with two 'fantastic' deals Liverpool made this summer

Jurgen Klopp loves two deals that Liverpool made this summer. The boss is clearly thrilled with his squad right now.

Liverpool have certainly been busy this summer. Not only have we seen three players arrive at the club but we’ve seen a few big names depart – most notably, Sadio Mané.

Transfers, though, aren’t all the Reds have been up to. They’ve also moved to secure long-term contracts for key players and Mohamed Salah tops the lot there. The Egyptian’s deal was up in 2023 but Liverpool have spent big to keep him around for three more years.

That’s understandably dominated talk this year but he’s not the only renewal. Liverpool also tied James Milner down to another year – his previous deal expired on June 30th. This week the Reds also signed a commitment with Joe Gomez for five more years.

That’s a big one. Gomez’s lack of football last season (just 331 Premier League minutes) could easily have pushed him out the exit door. Instead, his future is firmly at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp loves two contract deals

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of those two latter contracts. He labelled them ‘absolutely fantastic’ in an interview with Liverpoolfc.com this week.

“Fantastic, absolutely fantastic – that’s how you build a team,” said Klopp. “Millie is incredibly important for us. Who doesn’t know it yet or doesn’t believe it yet just has to read Pep Lijnders’ new book, which comes out early August I think.

“It’s like a love letter to James Milner – well deserved, by the way! And Joey is really a world-class defender, no shadow of a doubt. He believes in this project, he believes in himself and he wants to be a Liverpool FC player.

“And we want the team to stay obviously. I know what people say in these moments: ‘But you have him, you have him, you have him.’ We’ll need the quality and we have the quality. And Joe Gomez when he played was outstanding for us and he will be outstanding for us.”

It’s particularly telling that Klopp highlights the squad building here. Both players are key in that regard as two of the most versatile players Liverpool have.

Gomez is an elite centre-back – and one for the future – but is also adept at covering right-back. He’ll even cover the left at a push. That’s a fantastic thing to have in your squad as just one player makes the entire back-four more secure.

Milner is certainly similar. Not only is he the club’s vice-captain but the veteran midfielder can play anywhere. He’ll also play the full-back roles, as well as anywhere in midfield. Klopp would have hated to lose Milner as he’s essentially irreplaceable – only experience can bring that level of versatility.

Two deals that are well worth applauding, then.
