Report: 'Strange' Liverpool player is next in line for new contract after Joe Gomez deal

Naby Keita is next in line for a Liverpool contract, according to reports. The Guinean may not be the last this summer, however.

This comes from the Mirror. They claim that Naby Keita is next in line for a new Liverpool contract and that could happen soon.

Keita’s current deal expires in 2023, making a renewal vital if the Reds aren’t to lose the player for free next summer. It sounds as though they’re currently negotiating an extension – and he’s not the only one.

Diogo Jota is apparently in line for a new contract, too, though after Keita. That’s mirroring a report from Goal that said something similar. The forward could get a big pay rise after his fantastic first two years at Anfield.

And this all comes after Joe Gomez signed a new long-term deal, of course. The centre-back tied his future to Liverpool and appears set to fight for his place at the club after a difficult couple of years.

Naby Keita set for a new Liverpool contract

This one certainly isn’t a shock – we wouldn’t expect Liverpool to entertain the idea of letting Keita walk for free. Gini Wijnaldum did but in a different situation. The Dutchman was 30 and tying him to a new contract left little room for any sale down the line.

Keita, though, is still only 27 and right in his prime years. In fact, Jurgen Klopp believes we’ve just seen his best season yet. This would be Liverpool investing in an asset that they could still feasibly sell in a year. At the very least, they’d be tying Keita down for his peak.

But it’s not without risk. Jamie Carragher summed Keita up last season when he labelled him a ‘strange’ player. Great form is typically followed by poor performances or injury and the Guinean just hasn’t put together a consistent season yet.

Still, the talent is absolutely there and he does appear to be improving. At the very least, last season saw some truly fantastic performances from Keita. The win at Old Trafford and the 3-1 against Benfica stand out as particularly brilliant.

A new contract makes complete sense, then, and with any luck, it’s a springboard to an even better Keita over the next few years.
