Report: Liverpool will take five of their former players on pre-season tour with them, including their old captain

Liverpool will take five former players on tour with them to the Far East in order to perform media duties for the club.

According to The Athletic, Sami Hyypia, Luis Garcia, Vladimir Smicer, Jose Enrique and Jason McAteer will all join Liverpool’s tour next week.

The former stars are reportedly set to ‘satisfy the demands of sponsors’ in providing meet-and-greet opportunites.

The move is seen as a way of affording Jurgen Klopp’s players more time to rest during the trip. The five retired pros will take the place of Klopp’s current stars in performing duties away from the pitch.

Unfamiliar territory for Liverpool after three years away

This is undoubtedly a really smart move from Liverpool. Although it’s important to give fans all over the world a glimpse of their heroes in red, the players also have a season to prepare for.

You get the sense that Klopp could really do without these kind of journeys. But given that it’s the first such trip since pre-Covid in 2019, it’s a good source of extra revenue for the club.

For some Liverpool players it’ll be their first chance of seeing just how fervent the support is miles away from home.

After the end-of-season parade in May, it should provide even more insight for the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.

Ultimately though, Liverpool’s preparations are all about success for the season ahead. The trip only lasts a week, and will take in games against Manchester United in Bangkok and Crystal Palace in Singapore.

Liverpool will then fly to Austria for their fabled pre-season camp.

Before then though, it’ll be nice to see some former stars mixing around with the Liverpool squad. They’re not necessarily the most decorated of players to have played for The Reds. But in former captain Hyypia there is at least one pretty big draw for fans in Asia.
