'We're so blessed': Joe Gomez says Liverpool fans 'caught me by surprise' with their gesture last season

Joe Gomez says Liverpool fans ‘caught him by surprise’ last season with one gesture. The centre-back has just committed to a new contract.

Joe Gomez will stay with Liverpool as the club announced on Thursday that he’s signed a new long-term contract. It comes after a difficult season for the centre-back – he started just four Premier League games.

That naturally brought about speculation that Gomez could seek to leave the club. He’s now 25, after all, and spending most weeks sitting on the bench. This is a player who started regularly as the Reds won the Premier League title in 2020 and he could easily start for most teams around.

But he’s decided to stay and fight for his place. It’s easy to see why, too, as Gomez talked to Liverpoolfc.com about his love for the club. In particular, the trophy parade in May stands out to the player.

It came on the heels of Liverpool losing in the Champions League final and falling just one point shy in the Premier League. Still, thousands and thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate the team after their domestic cup success.

For Gomez, it was a sign of a special club and a special city.

Joe Gomez on the Liverpool fans

“For me, it definitely caught me by surprise,” said Gomez. “But again, it’s a sign of why we want to be here as a team and why we’re so blessed to be a part of this club.

“I don’t think there’s another team in the world that could lose the final and then come back to that kind of reception and support.

“I think many of us quoted it as one of the best days of our lives and we’re not going to say that lightly.”

It’s an easy one to understand, certainly. Liverpool fans showed incredible support with the parade, even after bitter disappointment in Paris.

And why wouldn’t you want to play in front of that? Gomez certainly does and despite his struggles last season, he’s ready to fight for his place back. That’s the pull of Liverpool right now.
