Report: 25-year-old goes and tells Liverpool that he really doesn't want to leave this summer

Joe Gomez doesn’t want to leave Liverpool this summer, and is hoping to sign a new deal at the club in the near future.

That’s according to The Times, who claim that the 25-year-old is ‘determined’ to force his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

Gomez has reportedly ‘underlined his commitment’ to the club following his return to pre-season training this week. It’s claimed that this has ‘paved the way’ for a new, long-term contract to be penned.

The centre-back struggled for minutes last season, but Jurgen Klopp is reportedly looking to hand him opportunities over ‘the coming months.’

It’s claimed that would have received ‘no shortage’ of interest should his decision have been to leave the club.

All’s well that ends well

This is one that has rumbled on throughout the back half of last season, and into the summer. Thankfully, it now looks set to culminate in Gomez extending his stay at Anfield.

In some cases, it’s a win-win. Liverpool protect the player’s value and Gomez gets assurances that he’s still part of Klopp’s plans.

It may also mean that the England international features more than he did last season. After just 11 starts all year, he could have been forgiven for wanting to move on.

Should he endure a similar campaign in 2022/23, then surely it would be time to cut loose.

If Gomez does sign a new contract, in that even Liverpool could still expect a big fee for him. He is still only twenty-five and would potentially walk into most teams in Europe. Klopp certainly rates him that highly, anyway.

But for now, let’s hope that Joe’s injury and form issues are behind him, and he can go on to be the player that he has always looked capable of being.
