Report: Club are now actually hoping that Liverpool try and sign their £85m player off them again

Juventus are hoping that Liverpool will reignite their interest in Matthijs de Ligt, in order to start a bidding war with Chelsea.

That’s according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport. They claim that Juve aren’t happy with Chelsea’s current offer, and hope that interest arrives from elsewhere, namely Liverpool, Manchester City, United or PSG.

Chelsea are reportedly offering around £64.5m for de Ligt. This isn’t nearly enough for Juve, who are reportedly looking for at least £85m.

It’s claimed that Juventus are hoping to sort their player’s future out ‘in the shortest possible time.’

Liverpool used to drive up the price

Now, we appear to be getting to the crux of Liverpool’s reported interest in de Ligt.

It has always seemed pretty unlikely that The Reds would be one of the teams willing to go anywhere near the Dutchman’s release clause.

He’s a super player, but Liverpool simply don’t need a centre-back right now. That could change should Joe Gomez leave the club this summer, but in that scenario, a player like Gleison Bremer would look much more realistic.

Instead, it seems as though Liverpool’s name is being used as a means to drive up the price.

As things stand, Chelsea are reportedly the only serious bidder for de Ligt. With the player seemingly wanting out, but The Blues unwilling to raise their bid, it makes sense that Juve would try to drum up additional interest.

There have been reports that Liverpool are ‘dreaming’ of partnering de Ligt with Virgil Van Dijk. Despite that, if Juve really are waiting for Liverpool to come to the table, they might be waiting a very long time.
