Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has claimed that Mohamed Salah is better than Erling Haaland.
Speaking to the UMM YouTube channel, James was asked to rank the Liverpool forward, Haaland and Son Heung-Min.
“It’s a good question,” began the pundit. “Mo Salah has repeatedly done it and done it and done it, Son this season has been incredible and Haaland is still a young pup with tremendous, tremendous performance.”
Football is of course about opinions. But surely no-one could claim that either Haaland or Son are currently better than Liverpool’s Egyptian King.
Salah comes out on top
Salah has extra competition for next season’s Golden Boot. The 30-year-old scooped his third such award last season, sharing it with Tottenham’s Son.
Mo will have his eyes set on picking up the gong for a record-equalling fourth time in 2022/23. Haaland’s addition to the Premier League will hopefully inspire Salah to even further heights.
Manchester City’s new man is a goalscoring machine. The 21-year-old has 175 goals in 221 senior appearances. Those are incredible numbers.
In a side as free-scoring as City, he will surely be Salah’s main contender to sit atop the scoring charts.
Elsewhere, Harry Kane is still around and ended the season in blistering form. Jamie Vardy is always a threat if he can stay fully fit and Gabriel Jesus may even fancy his chances as the out-and-out striker at Arsenal.
We’d still back Salah over all of them, though. As James points out, Liverpool’s number 11 has done it time and time again.
With a break mid-season for the World Cup, Salah will be fresh, firing and desperate to prove his quality once more.
As his contract situation rumbles on, it looks increasingly like it’ll be his last chance to do so in a Liverpool shirt.
