Liverpool aren’t consistent enough to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title.
That’s the view of former England player Trevor Sinclair. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Sinclair claimed that Liverpool can’t match Man City for consistency and control over teams week after week.
“Liverpool go all guns blazing, you don’t know what you’re going to get, that’s almost their weakness,” said the pundit.
“Because City are so controlled, they win games the same way time and time again. I’ve always stuck to that point, Liverpool are more of a cup-winning team because on their given day they can beat anybody. Manchester City will get the most points consistently because they’ll beat teams more regularly.”
It sounds like Sinclair still has Liverpool’s early Jurgen Klopp teams in mind. You don’t deliver 90+ points in the Premier League on three different occasions without being consistent.
No problem with Liverpool
Sinclair has got the wrong end of the stick here. The only reason Liverpool haven’t won more than one Premier League title is because of City’s sheer brilliance.
On both occasions that Pep Guardiola’s team have pipped The Reds to the title, they’ve done so by a point. Their totals at the end of those two seasons have read 98 and 93.
It isn’t by some grand design that Liverpool have lost out, they’ve simply been edged by an unbelievable team.
Of course Liverpool dropped some silly points last season, but City did too. But the fact remains that Liverpool only lost two games in the league all year.
You should be able to drop points here and there and still have enough to win the league. Unfortunately for Liverpool, with this City team around, that is no longer the case.
They know that they’ll have to aim to be perfect once again as they try to win a second Premier League title in 2022/23. Despite Sinclair’s assertions, consistency isn’t the issue, they just have to make sure that when they get the chance, they take points off their nearest competitors.
