Report: Steven Gerrard wants 'world-class' Liverpool player at Anfield, appears to be his no.1 pick

Steven Gerrard wants Joe Gomez at Aston Villa, according to reports. The former Liverpool captain appears to prioritise the defender.

This comes from the Mirror. They claim that Steven Gerrard wants Joe Gomez at Aston Villa and that the Liverpool defender appears to be his no.1 pick at centre-back.

Not that Gomez is the only option – Villa also like Burnley’s Nathan Collins – but the Red is top of the list. They seem to believe that he’s the ideal partner for new signing Diego Carlos.

Gomez is in a strange position at Liverpool after only starting nine games in all competitions last season. Four of those came in the Premier League, where Jurgen Klopp gave him just 331 minutes – under four games’ worth.

Now 25, the Englishman might fancy a new start and regular first-team football. It all depends on how patient he is.

We don’t particularly want to lose Gomez but that’s undeniably a selfish stance right now. We’re talking about a fantastic player – one Klopp calls ‘world-class’ – and someone who played a key role as Liverpool won the league in 2020.

To fall from being a regular starter in a title-winning side to four Premier League starts in just two years is remarkable. It’s entirely understandable if Gomez wants to move on and find regular game-time as he’s fourth-choice right now.

But we just can’t imagine Liverpool will get a price reflective of Gomez’s talent. His injury record and place in the pecking order won’t allow for that – and that makes any sale hard to stomach.

There’s also the fact that both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are in their 30s now. It might not actually be too long before Gomez gets his first-choice place back alongside Ibrahima Konaté – or at least moves back ahead of Matip.

It all depends on his patience. If Gomez wants first-team football now, though, we imagine Villa and Gerrard can put serious pressure on the situation.
