Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has claimed that it’s his ‘dream’ for Liverpool to buy young centre-back Ronnie Edwards.
Posting on Twitter, MacAnthony reacted to Edwards starting for England U19’s on Friday evening. “Of course” wrote the Posh chairman, to which fans responded with pleas not to sell the teenager.
After one supporter suggested Peterborough would need ‘at least £10m’ for Edwards, another joked that MacAnthony should sell him to Liverpool for 50p.
“My dream is for them (Liverpool) to buy him,” replied the owner. MacAnthony is well-known to be a boyhood Liverpool fan. Perhaps The Reds should be taking a look.
Edwards impressing alongside Liverpool’s Quansah
After being picked up from Barnet in 2020, Edwards broke into the Peterborough first-team last season.
In a poor season for the club where they were relegated to League One, Edwards was a definite bright spot. He played 34 times in the Championship, and his good displays earned him a call-up to the England U19 squad.
His eye-catching debut season has also seen a price-tag of £15m slapped on him, as per Birmingham Mail.
Two of his subsequent eight caps for England have come in this summer’s U19 European Championship. In both games the 19-year-old has been partnered by Liverpool youngster Jarrell Quansah.
As a result, it’s a safe bet that Liverpool have been keeping an eye on the goings-on during the tournament.
With their focus on Quansah, it’s normal to assume that they’ll also be aware of his centre-back partner.
England have progressed to the semi-final of the competition, where they’ll face Italy tomorrow.
If Edwards retains his spot next to Quansah and can impress in that role, maybe he can move a step closer to fulfilling MacAnthony’s wish.
