Paul Merson believes that Mohamed Salah is only the third-best signing that Jurgen Klopp has made for Liverpool. It’s hard to disagree.
Paul Merson ranked Jurgen Klopp’s best Liverpool signings this week in a piece for SportsKeeda. Notably, he has two-time PFA Player of the Year Mohamed Salah as the third best.
That’s quite low, given all Salah has accomplished for the club since arriving. Salah has swept all individual awards and broken the record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season. The Egyptian has been an absolute revelation and is one of the world’s greatest players.
Here’s what Merson had to say about him:
“The numbers Mohamed Salah has amassed since joining Liverpool in 2017 are truly extraordinary. He has proved to be a big-game player for the club and scores all kinds of goals, while his ability to create is one of the most underrated aspects of his gameplay.
“He’s won the Premier League Golden Boot thrice as a winger, which is proof that on his day, he is genuinely unplayable.”
And yet, there are two superior signings.
Mohamed Salah is Klopp’s third-best signing
Merson puts two defensive players ahead of Salah: Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker. The pair, both signed in 2018, essentially transformed Liverpool into a trophy-winning machine.
It’s not difficult to see that, either. The team went from being also-rans to Champions League finalists after just a few months of Van Dijk. Alisson then helped them win the competition in his first season.
And they’re also arguably the best in the world in their respective positions. Van Dijk almost undoubtedly is, while Alisson is the best possible fit for Liverpool at the very least.
We’ll disagree with Merson slightly on this one, though. Salah has had a greater impact than Alisson for us, though Van Dijk would top our list, too.
