Liverpool are about to receive around £1.5m from their Taiwo Awoniyi clause, according to Fabrizio Romano. The striker will move soon.

This comes from Fabrizio Romano. He confirms that Nottingham Forest are about to sign Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin for around £17m.

Importantly, Liverpool have a 10% sell-on clause for the player after sending him to Union last summer. The Reds received £6.5m for Awoniyi, per the BBC, and included that clause in the deal.

Now, it initially seems that Liverpool will get £1.7m as the Nigerian joins Forest. The Liverpool Echo says that’s not the case, though, and the figure will be closer to £1.5m. We imagine that’s something to do with the way this transfer is structured – but they don’t go into detail.

All that’s for sure is that Liverpool will get a chunk of cash here for a transfer they’re not actually involved in. It takes their overall fee for Awoniyi to £8m – a slightly more palatable intake for the player.

Liverpool to benefit from Taiwo Awoniyi clause

We said way back at the start of the season that Liverpool didn’t get enough for Awoniyi. Yes, there were work-permit issues but he wasted no time at all in showing he was a talented player.

15 Bundesliga goals across the 2021/22 campaign show that and explain why his value nearly tripled in a year. If only that clause was a little bit larger – Liverpool could make some serious money here.

It’s worth pointing out, too, that Jurgen Klopp is apparently still a big fan of Awoniyi. The Telegraph makes that claim and we wonder if the Reds will have an extra eye on their former player over the course of the season.

Though, if he does perform at Forest, that value could actually triple once again and contrary to popular belief, triples isn’t always best.
