Reported Liverpool transfer target will be available for £52m next summer, journalist confirms

Reported Liverpool transfer target Christopher Nkunku has a new £52m release clause after signing a contract extension with RB Leipzig.

That’s according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who relayed the news via his Twitter page. He claims that the clause will come into effect from next summer, and could reportedly reach ‘higher figures.’

Having signed an extension until 2026 with Leipzig, it looks unlikely that the Frenchman will leave for Liverpool, or anywhere else this summer.

However, Romano claims that ‘many top clubs’ are ‘well informed’ on Nkunku’s situation for next year.

Liverpool in with a chance next year

Liverpool have been one of the clubs rumoured to have been willing to break the bank for Nkunku. ESPN were one such outlet to name The Reds as one of the 24-year-old’s reported suitors.

Though it was claimed it would have taken as much as £85m to sign the player who smashed in 35 goals last season.

In that respect, the new £52m release clause can be seen as something of a bargain.

Should Nkunku go on to have a similar season to the one he’s just had, it will look even more of a steal.

If it pans out that way, then Liverpool will face plenty of competition if they’re interested in Nkunku. But with a relatively low transfer fee, perhaps The Reds could tempt the France international with higher wages then they otherwise might have done.

His versatility across the forward line and even in midfield make him an attractive option for Liverpool. In a summer where they could lose both Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, he could provide a fix for both positions.

He’s in the age bracket they usually go for, the price-range they usually go for and potentially wouldn’t ask for ‘superstar’ wages.

One to watch for next season.
