Arsenal have reportedly put in a bid for Raphinha and that might not be ideal for Liverpool. The Reds need a safety net.
The Athletic reports that Arsenal have bid for Raphinha – and they’re not the only ones saying that. There are apparently doubts that the player wants to move there (Barcelona and Chelsea are more tempting bids) but he’d settle for the Gunners.
And that’s the important bid. Leeds United are growing more certain that Raphinha won’t renew his contract and it’s in their best interests to sell this summer – Arsenal are simply getting things moving.
It’s a move that could affect Liverpool, too. The Reds, after all, have had links to Raphinha for quite some time now.
The Mirror reported in March that they liked Rahpinha, as did UOL in Brazil. More tellingly, his agent, Deco, said late last year that Liverpool had tried to sign the Brazilian in the summer of 2021 (Globo Esporte).
Arsenal make Raphinha bid
Raphinha shines on the right-wing for Leeds and we’ve said before that he’d be an ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian is out of contract next summer, after all, and it feels very possible that he’ll leave Liverpool.
But as we’ve also said previously, Salah staying until 2023 could cost the Reds their shot at Raphinha. He’s highly unlikely to join a club where he spends a year playing backup.
And that appears to be the situation here. Liverpool can’t afford to sign Raphinha right now, nor do we believe he’d join. Not when he has first-team offers elsewhere.
Thus the Salah safety net looks a little weaker now. If the Egyptian doesn’t renew his deal – and that could go either way – Liverpool will have one less target left to replace him. They’ve got a busy year of scouting ahead now.
