Liverpool now want to sign Marco Asensio, according to reports. It’s a difficult transfer to make happen, however.
This comes from AS in Spain. They claim that Liverpool want to sign Marco Asensio and have let the player know. Asensio would essentially be a replacement for Sadio Mané in the squad.
Real Madrid are open to selling, too. The Spaniard is in the final year of his contract now, thus this is the final year Real can get a fee for him.
However, it won’t be an easy one to make happen. Real value the player at around £34m, even with only one year left. That’s pretty much what Liverpool will get for Mané – a far more reputable player. On top of that, Asensio wants about £5.5m per year, which isn’t easy to match.
Then comes the real issue. Asensio is after first-team football, which he rarely gets at Real. It’s unclear whether Liverpool could give him that, however, and that might mean this one doesn’t get off the ground.
Liverpool want Marco Asensio
This one actually does make some sense for Liverpool – just not at £34m. We think they’ll move towards using attacking midfielders for creativity, rather than a False 9. That’s at least what signing Darwin Nunez indicates.
Thus there would be a spot for Asensio in a playmaking role. His competition could be in midfield, then, and not in the forward line – though, his versatility would be welcome there.
This one might hinge on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, though. Should he leave, we think Liverpool can just about justify a move for Asensio but we’re not sure they will if he stays. The Mirror claims they’re now thinking of keeping the player but should he ask for an exit, we imagine Oxlade-Chamberlain would get one.
That would open a spot that Jugen Klopp clearly values. Then, and really only then, could a move for Asensio be viable. We won’t hold our breath.
