Pundit says Liverpool fired 'a warning' with Darwin Nunez deal

Stan Collymore believes Liverpool finally fired a ‘warning’ to Manchester United with their Darwin Nunez transfer. The Reds saw off competition for the Uruguayan.

Liverpool completed a deal for Darwin Nunez this week. He could potentially be their transfer record, in fact, if all the add-ons come to fruition.

For now, though, it’s simply a massive investment in an exceptional young player. At only 22, Nunez should only get better and he’s already a striker capable of bagging 32 goals in a season. This is one Liverpool can be proud of.

The Reds can be especially proud of the fact they saw off competition to sign Nunez, too. The likes of Record claim that Manchester United were in for the player with what was potentially a bigger contract offer. He rejected such offers, however, in order to sign on at Anfield.

Liverpool beat United to Darwin Nunez

Former Liverpool striker, Stan Collymore, believes this is an example of the Reds seeing a warning out to the likes of United. They’re clearly willing to fight for the biggest players, he says, and won’t settle for anything less.

“For Liverpool, it’s a risk that’s worth taking,” Collymore told the Mirror. “Firstly, that is because Manchester United were said to be in for him as well and you’re taking him from them.

That’s good, that’s a warning shot across the bows of United and [Manchester] City, and others such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur which is something I’ve said I want to see from Liverpool for a while now.

“If my old club is going to cement their place as one of the top two teams in the Premier League for some time then it’s the kind of signing they need to make.”

It’s hard to disagree. Liverpool are clearly one of the top two teams in the Premier League right now but cementing themselves there means investing in the future. They’ve done just that, signing a fantastic 22-year-old striker for huge money.

Making sure you sign those players when they’re available is how you stay on top and Liverpool clearly believe that. Now they just need to make sure their midfield is future-proofed, too.
