Liverpool signed the true jewels from Portugal as three rivals reportedly follow suit. The Primeira Liga is proving to be rich with talent.

Liverpool signed Darwin Nunez this week in what could go on to be a club-record transfer. That’s particularly notable as he comes from the Portuguese Primeira Liga. It’s not a league that’s recognised as one of the world’s best, yet the Reds believe their record signing could come from there.

And perhaps that’s largely because of Luis Diaz. The Colombian arrived from FC Porto in January and thrived, going on to start in the Champions League final. Liverpool signed Nunez knowing full well that players from Portugal can carry their form over to the Premier League.

Now it seems that other Premier League sides are looking to Portugal this summer, too. Arsenal will sign Fabio Vieira from FC Porto, per the Athletic. O Jogo claims that Everton want Matheus Nunes from Sporting, while CMJornal names Wolves as seriously interested in the same player.

As teams look to attacking talent from Portugal, it’s clear that Liverpool played things superbly this year. They signed the undoubted best two options in the country.

Diaz was absolutely sensational over the first half of the season, scoring for fun with Porto. That triggered Liverpool’s transfer at the end of January when it appeared Tottenham Hotspur would land him.

And with that, Nunez became the standout signing. Players like Rafa Silva were having phenomenal seasons but he’s 28 – Nunez, at 22, was the investment as he scored 32 goals in all competitions.

Liverpool got him, too, just as teams lineup to poach players from Portugal. It appears to have opened the door as now so many teams look to get their big-money signings from the country.

Now, of course, big signings have come from Portugal before. Ruben Dias to Manchester City stands out, as does Bruno Fernandes to Manchester United. But we can’t remember another period like this where so many teams were all looking to buy there from once.

Liverpool got in first, though, and came away with the two biggest prizes.
